animals and plants to put into a large closed ecosystem? bottle biology, must be both aquatic and terrestrial?

Question by Chris B: animals and plants to put into a large closed ecosystem? bottle biology, must be both aquatic and terrestrial?
it would be made up of 10 2Litre coke bottles and maybe a couple of the old mason jars if i can get them. bottles will be connected by pvc pipe to allow animals to go between sections.
must have both aquatic and terrestrial
must have both plants and animals living in each section

current ideas:
Aquatic
use 60% as aquatic
using elodea for oxygen production
using whatever small animals come in the water from the pond as well as to get bacteria?
guppies or maybe a goldfish to create waste for nutrients for plants? (what plants should i use?)
possibly cheat the animal for both sections using small frogs from the pond?
maybe triops or shrimp
snails to eat algae

Terrestrial
what plants should I use?
types of insects?

suggestions?
thanks

Stick with simple plants. Add some compost for bacteria and fungi. Set it all up with the lids off for a week or more. Use what stays/arrives. It will probably not gain stability, so don’t fret if it cycles out of control and crashes.

what are other odd animals to put in my fishtank?

Question by : what are other odd animals to put in my fishtank?
just trying to think of some cool animals to put in my freshwater aquariums…
the only things i can think of are triops and crayfish… something other than fish unless theyre odd.
right now i have a little 10 gallon half moon tank. i currently have 4 feeder goldfish (about 1-2 inches a peice)(i plan to get rid of a couple of them if they dont die off) and a red wag platty. i know thats a tad bit much for a 10 gal tank but they seem to do fine. im waiting to get my own place then i plan on getting a couple 55 gallon tanks.

Hi,
have you ever heard of Sea Monkeys, or Triops, or Aquasaurs?
Well if so, do you know any other kind of creatures that are similar to those?
I am looking to buy some.

List all the animals that come in a kit and hatch from eggs?

Question by Jeff: List all the animals that come in a kit and hatch from eggs?
i know about sea monkeys and triops but are there more?

Best answer:

Answer by Chris
That’s pretty much it…I’m sure that you could probably find more by exploring “hobby shops” or “science stores for kids” also, look into Toys R Us, they sell these kits too.

You can also order ants, for ant farms and worms for compost, but they don’t hatch from eggs

You can also get certain butterfly species as caterpillar , or sometimes even as eggs, raise them and release them

What other fresh water animals use diapause when water has dried up?

Question by hottlikefire9000: What other fresh water animals use diapause when water has dried up?
I know there are killifish, fairyshrimp, clam shrimp, and triops. Brine shrimp require salt and I am not looking for commercial names for anything. I just want to know if there are anymore. I’m thinking about making a tank full of “just add water” pets.

Lungfish are capable of digging into the mud and stay there for a long time – even if it dries completely – until the water returns. If I remember correctly, certain species of daphnia lay what’s called ‘resting eggs’ if the conditions degrade beyond what they require. Those eggs will hatch when there’s fresh water again.

Q&A: Is there any water animals like triops that you can hatch easily from eggs?

Question by The Joker: Is there any water animals like triops that you can hatch easily from eggs?
I have just had triops and am now interested in other similar type of things that I can hatch for fun. I have heard of fairy shrimp but can not find them for sale anywhere online. I want something like that though.

Sea monkeys! Fun to watch. They sell them at Hobby Lobby, and Michael’s, I think. =) The cost for a simple set is about ten bucks. They get more expensive with more elaborate tanks.
