Q&A: Got a goldfish from a carnival. What can I do to keep him alive over night until I can get him a tank?

Question by Kate L: Got a goldfish from a carnival. What can I do to keep him alive over night until I can get him a tank?
Just won a little common goldfish from the fair, but it’s late at night and all the pet supply stores are closed. What steps can I do to keep him alive over night?

I have him in a Tupperware, and I added some distilled water to the water he was in. I figure that have less stuff in it then regular water.

Also, I have some triops food, can I feed him a little?

And if anyone knows of a good little affordable first fish pet tank let me know.
Also, looking at a tank like this:

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752291&ab=fish_fc1d

I know it’s been said that they need a lot of room, but it sounds to be it’s because they just are really dirty. Would it be bad to have a fish in a tank like this and just clean the water more frequently?

Also, he’s about an inch. Dunno if that means anything

not sure about the food– but keep an eye on him.

as for the tank, nothing will be very cheap. dont get a bowl. to start out you could gett a 20 gal but if you got a 55 then that would be good. goldfish can grow to be about 1 foot long. so eventually you could build a pond and put a few more in, too. If you cant do that you could find someone who can take him or sadly keep him in a 20 gal iguess its better than a bowl :/

Identifying Sea Creature from North Carolina?

Question by blevinsamy2000: Identifying Sea Creature from North Carolina?
It was on the beach in Nag’s head scuttling for the ocean. It was about the size of a baby sea turtle. It had a hard pink exoskeleton that was mottled pink with darker pink spots. It had what appeared to be insect-like legs similar to those of a triops. It had trouble rolling over when the waves knocked it on it’s back. From the distance, it looked like a baby sea turtle, but up close it looked more like a horse-shoe crab or something. It had no tail or anything.
The creature was definitely not a crab of any time. It was more insect like.

I do not live near an ocean, so I’m not sure what kind of creatures you have, but I’m going to take a stab in the dark based on the “looks like a horseshoe crab” remark.
All right, my guess is. . . . . . a hermit crab?

How do you make ‘miniature fossils’ from plaster??

Question by corkymybottles: How do you make ‘miniature fossils’ from plaster??
My child (7yrs) has this ‘triops’ (tadpole shrimp) kit, they get up to 2 inches long. When they die my child wants to try and make ‘miniature fossils’ out of their dead bodies. I know it sounds gross! She’s really into science and likes to combine it with ‘art’. We have NO idea where to even start.. Any suggestions? (Personally i thousght we could just feed them to the cats, my daughter doesn’t think that’s a good idea)

I can help you i thing it is a great idea and is very easy!.
What you need:
-plaster
-water
-milk container, or an other cardboard container.
-veseline
Instructions
-Mix plaster and water until you have a mud texture.
-Place the mixture in the container. wait 5 to 8 min to dry. ( note: do not let it dry completely)
-cover the tadpole shrimps with vaseline.
– when is hard enough place the tadpole shirmps and press so half of the shrimp is covered.
-let it dry overnight.
-next day take the plaster out and remove the shrimp.
Your fossil will be perfect. your daughter can paint it or let it like it is, or you can add vegetal color to the plaster.
If the shrimps are 2″ long you ll probably need a cardboard box of 4″ x 4″.
good luck and enjoy

List all the animals that come in a kit and hatch from eggs?

Question by Jeff: List all the animals that come in a kit and hatch from eggs?
i know about sea monkeys and triops but are there more?

Best answer:

Answer by Chris
That’s pretty much it…I’m sure that you could probably find more by exploring “hobby shops” or “science stores for kids” also, look into Toys R Us, they sell these kits too.

You can also order ants, for ant farms and worms for compost, but they don’t hatch from eggs

You can also get certain butterfly species as caterpillar , or sometimes even as eggs, raise them and release them

They only grow up to an inch. The tank from the kit is plenty big enough. I’m not sure If you need a lamp for them, I haven’t had them in a while.

I want to separate triops eggs from sand. 10 points best answer.?

Question by : I want to separate triops eggs from sand. 10 points best answer.?
And I was thinking of adding the sand and eggs to water and collecting the floating eggs. Will this wetting cause any eggs to hatch ? There are approx 100 eggs. And would take about 30 minuites to collect them and then half an hour to an hour for them to dry

Best answer:

Answer by Dan M
Dry them out first and then separate them. If you got a chance to watch the mother laying them she glues them together into a ball and then covers the ball with sand grains. You may have a lot more eggs than you think. We have gotten thousands of eggs from a single triops at one time. Once you have them counted, add them back to the sand. We usually put about 50 eggs per packet. Some of the eggs will hatch a few months after hatching. Most will take multiple wettings before they hatch. This strategy ensures the survival of the species in case a rainfall is too weak and temporary. And the eggs can last for many years if that first rainfall did fill the temporary natural ponds they live in.
