Don’t try and hatch them in a fish tank, a little container will do great.

Whats wrong with my triop?

Question by Princess: Whats wrong with my triop?
So Monkey(my triop) is about 6 days old. She is swimming around like crazy! I gave her a small boiled potato cube to nibble on and she is on and off of it(I took it out cause i thought that might be her problem). Did she over eat and thats what is making her swim like crazy or is it just a phase that small triops go through. also when she realized her potato was taken out, she will swim around even more than before! She will go to the spot where i had her potato and dig around there… i think she misses it.

Nothings wrong with her. She’s fine. Triops are naturally hyper.

Q&A: Triop idea failed….need help!?

Question by Moira: Triop idea failed….need help!?
Okay
I was going to do an experiment (I use that term lightly) on Triops! The experiment was going to go like this: separating the batch of eggs into 3 groups and feeding one bloodworms, one the given food, and one fish flakes. Hurray, right? NOT
They didn’t hatch because the heat source is not was not adequate enough
So…
that failed

Requirements:
Project board
display(optional)
Experiment
Research paper

Getting more eggs and/or a more adequate heat source are both out of the question for now.

I was thinking of something on the lines of the aquatic field, but I’m not sure what to do?
Any humane ideas?

Oh also, the rules are very strict about vertebrate animals too

Can you get ahold of some planaria, or another type of worm? When I was in high school, I took worms and tested the effect of caffeine on them… just bought some caffeine pills at the drug store, crushed them up, and did that. I found that caffeine slowed their growth greatly, but it also decreased the mortality rate.

You bought wild collected Triops eggs. Along with them you ended up hatching out many other aquatic life forms, almost all of which the Triops is likely to eat.

Depending on the species of your Triops you may not need a male. Some of them will lay fertile eggs even if they never share a body of water with a male.

Gravel is not a good idea. The grains have to be small enough for the Triops to sift through for food. If it’s a female the grains have to be small enough for her to paste to her ball of eggs after she lays it. The cemented on sand grains provide camouflage so that predators don’t find them. Sand from a river bank or stream should be good enough. Just be careful not to take it where, or downstream of where, they spray for insects.

This website tells you what size the tank should be(11″ x 6-1/4″x4-1/2″) – but not how much it will hold. Have fun raising triops!

Yes, Triops are highly cannibalistic. Unless they’re separated early, or in a large container, you’ll usually only end up with one or two eating the rest.
